Eight days after the appointment and already in labor, a pregnant woman (30) visited Schwyz Hospital last week. According to the husband’s description, everything started normally: a midwife took her to the maternity ward and gave her the infusion. But after about an hour and a half, the very pregnant woman was suddenly asked to perform two corona tests, a saliva test, and a nasal swab.
Insideparadeplatz.ch reports on the case. The pregnant woman did not want a nasal swab taken. They were promised no such test was necessary, the couple said. A saliva test would still work.
40 minute drive to the next hospital
“We fell from all the clouds,” says the father to 20min.ch. “My wife rejects the test through her nose because she is afraid of him.” The saliva test alone was not enough for the hospital.
After consultation between the midwife and her supervisor, it was clear that there would be no birth without a test. «I was afraid for my wife. We feel treated so inhumanly in such a difficult situation, ”says the husband.
Meanwhile, the contractions stopped. Probably from stress. The husband finally called the Spital Lachen SZ. There it proved to be simple. So the couple set out on the 40-minute drive to the nearest hospital.
The baby was born healthy
No crown test was necessary there. The delivery went smoothly and the baby was finally born healthy.
“We are very happy that it still worked so well,” says the father. What he and his wife would have done if no hospital had helped, he can’t say, “A spontaneous home birth would have been steep.”
Management invokes Corona protection
Schwyz Hospital justifies its approach with protecting patients and employees: “In current standard tests performed prior to all hospital admissions, positive patients have been regularly discovered in recent weeks.” A positive test does not mean that no treatment will be done. “Rather, it means that all protective measures are applied in accordance with the concept of protection for the treatment of patients who have tested positive.”
At the same time, Schwyz Hospital emphasizes: “As a hospital, we treat all patients equally in emergency situations and provide first aid.” The “corresponding guidelines” should be observed by employees and requested by patients and families.
Apparently, the pregnant woman in labor was not considered a medical emergency. “If a patient or family member defends himself against the requirements, we will seek together the best possible solution, always taking into account the current situation,” the hospital is also quoted.
The viral video caused a stir
The director of the Schwyz Hospital, Franziska Föllmi, caused a stir in Switzerland last fall when she raised the alarm about the shortage of hospital beds. In a viral video, he warned of a collapse of the emergency if drastic measures were not taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. (noo)
