The comrades reacted dismayed by the death of the vice president of the Bundestag, Thomas Oppermann.
The 66-year-old died unexpectedly on Sunday, SPD party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans tweeted.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was shocked and saddened. He has valued Oppermann for many years as a reliable and fair Social Democratic partner in large coalitions.
Oppermann had collapsed Sunday night while working on television with ZDF and was taken to the hospital. There he died.

Oppermann had announced in late August that he would not run again in the next parliamentary elections in autumn 2021. “After 30 years as a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament and the German Bundestag, now is the right time to do something different and start new projects, “he said.
From 2013 to September 2017, Oppermann from Lower Saxony was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag. In October 2017, he became Vice-President of the German Bundestag.
Before that, Oppermann was the first parliamentary manager of the SPD parliamentary group. From 1998 to 2003 he worked as Minister of Science and Culture in the Lower Saxony state government.
