Lauber must now take the consequences and step down, SP parliamentary group leader Roger Nordmann is quoted in a statement after a parliamentary group meeting. If Lauber is not resigned, the parliamentary group will support the impeachment motion in the judicial commission.
Lauber’s departure also demands the middle faction of CVP, EVP, and BDP. She unanimously supported a request for impeachment, as she said.
The judicial commission of 17 members of Parliament will be responsible for the impeachment proceedings against the federal prosecutor, which has been active since 2012, on May 13. Corresponding BDP policy Lorenz Hess of Bern has submitted a corresponding request.
Dispute over FIFA
The background to the discussions is a disciplinary procedure by the supervisory authority against Lauber. In the course of proceedings against the world soccer association Fifa, he allegedly violated his official duties, repeatedly said the falsehood, acted unfairly, and hindered the investigation by the authority. Supervisory authorities decided to cut wages by eight percent against Lauber for a period of one year.
Lauber denies the allegations. He has filed a complaint against the supervisory authority’s decision and the associated pay cut.
Lauber was narrowly re-elected on September 25, 2019 with just seven votes above the absolute majority. The resignation demands against the Federal Prosecutor had already been made in Parliament. The judicial commission had spoken out against Lauber’s reelection.
