In a talk with the media today, health director Lukas Engelberger and cantonal doctor Thomas Steffen comment on the situation in the canton of Basel-Stadt ahead of the autumn holidays. Both are convinced that the additional measures taken in the canton of Basel-Stadt are having an effect and have slowed the increase in the number of infections in August and September.

Fortunately, in the six weeks of school so far, only 17 of around 30,000 students, teachers and supervisors have tested positive, with the sources of infection all outside of schools.

Big events on October 1

In the months of July to the end of August, the canton of Basel-Stadt took several additional measures to keep the coronavirus under control in the canton. Lukas Engelberger, Health Director: “We would like to start the cooler season, which we respect, with a reduced number of cases. It has worked so far and I would like to thank the public for their cooperation. “

According to the decision of the Federal Council, large events will be possible again from October 1. The relevant rules are valid throughout Switzerland. It does not make sense to annul this decision at the cantonal level. However, if the number of cases increases dramatically in the region and the epidemiological situation worsens, the health department has the option of not granting a permit for the realization of large events or revoking a permit granted.

No one got infected at school

Before the autumn holidays, the canton doctor Thomas Steffen takes stock: “From our follow-up of contacts we see that the places of infection are still very widespread and can occur anywhere. So the virus is still there. At this time, in the canton of Basel-Stadt, mainly people between the ages of 21 and 30 are getting sick. “

Fortunately, schools have so far not been one of the sources of infection. In the six weeks since classes began after the summer break, only 17 people tested positive (two adults, 15 children and adolescents) out of a total of about 30,000 students and teachers and supervisors. In addition, there were 68 cases of quarantine (seven adults, 61 children / adolescents) due to close contact with a person suffering from Covid-19, mainly in the family environment. The sources of infection were all outside the schools.

Therefore, the concepts of protection of schools and nurseries worked well. To date, no class quarantine has been necessary. When the quarantine measures went into effect, there were no secondary cases in one institution either.
