Large amounts of snow created problems for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, among other things, which reported a temporary disruption on the route between Andermatt and Sedrun on Sunday morning on Twitter. At 10 o’clock the problem was solved.
The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) reported several line interruptions on Sunday. Therefore, the route between S-chanf and Scuol-Tarasp is interrupted due to the risk of snow slides. The Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains only go to S-chanf. The Landquart – Scuol-Tarasp trains only go to Lavin. Trains between Landquart and St. Moritz are canceled.
Travelers to and from Zurich / St. Gallen and to and from Scuol-Tarasp, it is recommended to travel on the Chur – Albula – Samedan route. A replacement bus service will be installed with a stop in Zernez between Samedan and Scuol-Tarasp, as announced by the RHB.
Rail traffic between Erstfeld and Bellinzona is also affected on the railway line between Göschenen and Erstfeld. Heavy snowfalls cause delays, SBB’s traffic service said.
Numerous accidents
Due to the danger of avalanches, the RhB closed the Bernina line between Pontresina and Poschiavo on Saturday night. Since the road has also been closed, track replacement buses cannot be used.
Furthermore, according to Alertswiss, the Furka road between Hospental and Realp is closed, as avalanches are expected in the affected area. As a result, the Furka car transport service between Oberwald VS and Realp UR was also suspended. Due to the danger of avalanches, the Sustenstrasse between Wassen UR and Färnigen UR had to be closed, as announced by the canton of Uri.
There were also problems on various roads in many places due to winter conditions. For example, on the St. Gotthard and in the canton of St. Gallen. There were more than a dozen auto accidents with property damage between Saturday and Sunday.
Avalanche danger
The large amount of fresh snow in the Ticino mountains and in southern Grisons created a great avalanche hazard. Large individual avalanches are possible on steep and shady slopes above 2400 meters.
For Sunday, the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (SLF) forecasts the second highest danger level 4 for northern Ticino, the Calanca valley and the Misox, from Bergell to the Bernina pass, as well as in Poschiavo and much of the Engadine.
Otherwise, there would be considerable avalanche hazard (level 3) or moderate avalanche hazard (level 2). Large amounts of fresh snow and heavy snowdrifts were the main hazard in hazard level 4 areas.
According to the SLF, many spontaneous medium to large avalanches are expected. On steep and shady slopes, very large individual avalanches can be expected above 2400 meters. Exposed traffic routes are at risk. According to the SLF, individual winter sports enthusiasts could easily trigger avalanches. Conditions are critical for ski tours, freeride and snowshoeing on the slopes.
