Michelle Gisin is also on the podium at the Zagreb slalom. Petra Vlhova takes her fourth win of the season.

The podium

  • 1. Petra Vlhova (SVK) 1: 59.08
  • 2. Katharina Liensberger (AUT) +0.05
  • 3. Michelle Gisin (SUI) +0.22

Who would have thought 2 years ago that Michelle Gisin would suddenly become a constant racer on the slalom podium? After her first World Cup victory before the turn of the year, Engelberg’s wife moved up a strong third place in Zagreb. She was already on Levi’s podium.

In fact, it would take even more: in the middle section, Gisin left everyone on their feet with a smooth ride, but a big mistake on the extended final slope cost him the decisive tenth.

The victory went to Petra Vlhova, who was already in the lead at half-time. The Slovakian also made a mistake in the final part, but saved 5 hundredths of the Austrian Katharina Liensberger, who had already finished second in Semmering.

With his third victory in slalom this season (+ 1 victory in the giant), Vlhova continues to lead both in slalom and in the World Cup overall.

The other Swiss women

  • 6. Wendy Holdener +1.46
  • DNF Melanie Meillard
  • DNQ Camille Rast

You couldn’t blame her lack of combat readiness – Wendy Holdener threw everything into the pan with more than 1 second behind the top after the first run. However, his push to the limit also provoked a fan or two; in the end, he couldn’t improve in sixth place.

Melanie Meillard was knocked out early in the first race, Camille Rast missed the cut.

Not an easy slope

In Zagreb, the finish area is “only” 768 meters above sea level. – conditions can be correspondingly difficult. Sulziger’s artificial snow with brown spots in places also made it difficult for the drivers this time.

Ancestor Ivica Kostelic was also a victim of the demanding slope. The Croatian slalom legend (14 World Cup wins) got away during his follow-up shot, but was able to finish the race.

So it goes

The coaches now have a good week off before the next slalom starts on Tuesday 12 January at Flachau.

For the speed specialists, things will continue next weekend in St. Anton, Austria. On Saturday there is a downhill race, on Sunday a Super-G.
