Mikaela Shiffrin wins second slalom victory this season in Petra Vlhova’s ‘living room’. Wendy Holdener turns 3.
The podium
- 1. Mikaela Shiffrin (United States) 1: 44,28
- 2. Petra Vlhova (SVK) +0.34 seconds
- 3. Wendy Holdener (SUI) +0.52
Wendy Holdener took the slalom podium for the 26th time and for the second time this season at Jasna. The Schwyzerin withstood the pressure on Slovakia’s less selective circuit in the second race and, as in the last race before the Flachau World Championship, it was third again. For the first victory in the slalom, 52 hundredths were missing.
Petra Vlhova, who lives just 20 minutes from Jasna, was unable to defend the lead after the first round and was outscored by Mikaela Shiffrin by 34 hundredths. However, the hometown hero is still the leader in the Slalom World Cup. In the overall World Cup, he narrowed the gap with Lara Gut-Behrami to 107 points.
Shiffrin with a clear increased shape
After Flachau, Shiffrin won for the second time in a row. The American found her way back to her former strength just in time for the upcoming season finale. The fight for the little crystal ball promises excitement: Vlhova’s cushion is 45 points at Shiffrin with 3 runs remaining.
The three athletes on the podium were in a league of their own. World champion Katharina Liensberger in fourth position already lost 1.42 seconds to the winner.
The other Swiss women
- 5. Michelle Gisin +2.24
- 17. Camille Rast +4.32
- OUT Mélanie Meillard
Michelle Gisin made a significant contribution to the good result of the Swiss team. It gave a better result in the midsection than it did in a “banana.” Camille Rast, who just finished race two in 30th place, made significant improvements and moved up to 17th place. Mélanie Meillard finally got involved and couldn’t take advantage of her good starting position (10th after the first race).
So it goes
On Sunday the technicians will complete a giant slalom in Jasna. The last two slalom races before the final phase of the World Cup in Lenzerheide will take place next Friday and Saturday in Are, Sweden.
