It was off the marked tracks, as the Valais canton police announced on Monday. The accident occurred in the “Lac des Vaux” area. The man left the official trail around 10:30 a.m. as his children continued down the slope.
When the father did not show up at the agreed meeting point, his children alerted the ambulance service around 11 a.m. During the search, emergency services found the skier about 80 meters below the point where he left the slope. Apparently the man had fallen onto a twenty-foot-high ledge in the fog and snow.
Failed resuscitation
After rescuers freed him from the snow, they began resuscitation. Due to the weather conditions, employers first had to transport the casualty to a helicopter landing pad using rescue sleds and gondolas.
He was then airlifted to Sitten Hospital. At night he succumbed to his injuries. The prosecutor has launched an investigation.
