A few weeks ago, American star Mikaela Shiffrin told BLICK: “Michelle Gisin can win the World Cup overall!” Will it happen? Gisin has recently narrowed the gap with leader Petra Vlhova, she is only 88 points behind the big favorite from Slovakia.
There are still 22 races on the program. Sure, I got off to a great start. But if we start discussing the World Cup in general now, we won’t have any more problems, ”Gisin said recently.
Okay. But it’s also a fact: since his first World Cup win at the Semmering Slalom, Austria, Engelberg’s wife has been relied on to do everything, including the big shot.
Magical things on the magic mountain: Here Gisin won the first slalom victory in 19 years(01:06)
Gisin’s impressive numbers
The hope of being the first Swiss world champion since Lara Gut-Behrami 2016 is justified. Because Gisin has been on cloud nine since the start of the season and scores hard in all disciplines. What stands out: The 27-year-old practically never fails, not even in the psychological discipline of slalom, where often every slip, every premature turn or hesitation means immediate exit.
Expressed in numbers: Gisin has not been eliminated in 22 World Cup slalom. That corresponds to 44 runs, because she always made it to the second round. Gisin is racking up points on the career meter, he hasn’t written a zero for almost four years. “Hopefully not in Zagreb either,” he says with a smile. The “Snow Queen Trophy” is scheduled for this Sunday in the Croatian capital, where the new queen of slalom is being sought in the famous Bärenberg.
World Cup races: 144
Podiums: 10
Siege: 1
Faults: 22
Failures in the last 22 slaloms: 0
Will Gisin be able to celebrate the next slalom trimph right away? In six attempts in Zagreb, he never got past seventh place. «Long and difficult slope. The hardest thing for me was always the pad. Actually, there was almost no snow, but something white that they came up the slope with trucks, “says the SUV.
She names three reasons for her constancy
Bad omen? Not necessarily. First, it was snowing over Zagreb this year, and second, Gisin is in the slalom shape of his life. He collects point by point because he hardly fails.
How is it able to do that? She gives three reasons. First, the snowball effect: “If you overcome it frequently, it just works, you gain confidence.” Second, experience: “Every one of the tens of thousands of goals that I have rounded in the last few years helps.” Third, knowledge: “I know quite well all the World Cup tracks and I know what to expect and where.
If you add it all up, Gisin has been dancing in the slalom pole forest for over 40 minutes without being eliminated. But wouldn’t there have been more wins with a little more risk? A hypothetical question. Penultimate winner of the Swiss slalom Marlies Rohrer-Oester (44) says: “I imagine it has a ketchup effect!”
