The coronavirus has already claimed more than 5,000 deaths in Switzerland. And the second corona wave hits Switzerland even more violently. Because the excess mortality is now significantly higher than during the first wave of March.
The excess mortality shows how many people in a certain age group die more than usual at this time of year. The Federal Statistical Office reports that this value has risen again considerably since the start of the second crown wave: “From week 43 (from October 19 to 25), the number of deaths in the group of people aged 65 or more will be above the long-term expected value again. “
Excess mortality is now worse than in the first wave
This excess mortality was also clearly evident in the first corona wave. “Only in week 14, between March 30 and April 5, 39 percent more people died than expected.” Now the numbers are significantly higher again. This is clearly demonstrated by the November high. A total of 1,886 people over the age of 65 died in the week of November 15-22 from a wide variety of diseases, including Covid-19.
Statistically, 1,148 deaths were expected for this period. With 1,886 dead today, they died 64 percent more than expected this week in November. So, a significant increase compared to the peak value of the first wave: during the first wave, the peak in week 14 was just under 1700 deaths. There was a slight downward trend again in mid-December, but still well above expected value.
Federal Councilor Alain Berset (48) made it clear that Switzerland does not currently have the crown pandemic well controlled. Now it demands that the cantons reimpose strict measures to contain the pandemic. (euc)
