“We tested positive,” writes US President Donald Trump on Twitter. Therefore, he and his wife Melania would go into quarantine. All appointments were canceled and a government emergency plan was activated, including the start of the so-called “Doomsday Plane”.
In the eyes of many BLICK readers, the diagnosis is helpful. They believe that Trump has not tested positive at all and is using the alleged disease for his election campaign.
“Now conjure up all the lazy tricks out of your pocket”
“Whoever believes will be blessed,” writes BLICK reader Paul Walder. “This is a transparent electoral campaign.” Trump just wanted to justify his lax response to the pandemic. “In ten days he will be there, very healthy, and he will say that he has always known that the virus is just the flu.”
Skepticism runs through most of the comment column. Our readers speak of a “primitive movement” and “alternative facts” in the classic Trump manner. After the disastrous television debate on Tuesday, he wanted to regain the sympathy of the population. “Now it conjures up all the lazy tricks out of your pocket,” writes reader Marco Caluori.
“Anyone who lies once is not believed”
Many readers refer to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who says he has already tested positive for Corona twice and allegedly exploited the disease politically. Now they believe they can see the same insidious strategy in Trump. “As with Bolsonaro, this is a campaign to distract from one’s failure and to feel sorry for himself,” writes reader Peter Henzi. And Samuel Karst refers to other political heavyweights like Boris Johnson, who have recovered well after an infection: “Why should Trump be any different?”
But it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Trump actually faked positive test results. “If you lie once, you won’t believe it,” it is said in several comments. It is also in line with the dirty election campaign currently underway in the United States, believes BLICK reader Sonia Box: “These elections will surpass anything that is possible in terms of lies.”
“After all, you have health insurance”
But not all of our readers have doubts about the test results. “I am surprised by the many malicious comments,” writes reader Nicole Lighty. “You can think what you want of Mr. Trump, but if it’s true, I wish you both a speedy recovery.” Catherine Binz also wishes a speedy recovery, but secretly hopes that Trump understands because of the infection: “That it is a lesson for him to minimize the suffering of others.”
Reader Petra Stark addresses another important aspect. “One thing is certain: Trump has health insurance compared to millions of other Americans,” he writes. “Many unemployed Americans no longer have health insurance.” The president, on the other hand, can afford the best treatment, as his personal physician Sean Conley said.
Finally, a side note with a behind-the-scenes look: Our moderators have had to delete numerous comments in which readers hope things will go wrong. Be critical: gladly. But death is not wished on anyone. Or as several readers say: “Stay fair.” ¨
