  • A ship with more than 40 crew members and around 5,800 head of cattle on board has disappeared off the Japanese coast. It apparently capsized and sank.
  • A member of the crew could be saved. A second person was able to be rescued, but later died.

According to rescued crew member Edvardo Sareno, the cargo ship with more than 40 crew members and around 5,800 head of cattle on board capsized and sank after an engine failed in strong waves as a result of a typhoon. So far there is no confirmation of this.

The Gulf Livestock 1 ship sank a year ago in an Australian port.

Survivor: “I’ve been very lucky.”

Authorities quoted Sareno as saying that he put on a life jacket and jumped into the sea. He has not seen any other members of the crew since. “Thank you, thank you very much,” he told rescuers as they led him to a larger boat. “Am I the only one? No one else?” He asked the rescuers. “I’m so sorry … I’ve been so lucky.”

A member of the sunken freighter's crew is rescued by the coast guard.

His colleagues include 38 Filipinos, two Australians and two New Zealanders. Except for the second man recovered, there is no trace of the rest so far. The Panama-flagged freighter left New Zealand for China in mid-August, where it was supposed to arrive on Friday.
