In the second giant slalom in Courchevel, which was postponed to Monday, Michelle Gisin passes over the podium.

The podium

  • 1. Mikaela Shiffrin (United States) 1: 08,32
  • 2. Federica Brignone (ITA) +0.82
  • 3. Tessa Worley (FRA) +1.09

Marta Bassino missed the giant slalom treble. The Italian had won the first two races of the season so far at Sölden and Courchevel (on Saturday). And on Monday too, it looked like the third win for a long time, until she lost her footing with a lead of more than a second and was eliminated.

Instead, the victory went to Mikaela Shiffrin. The American, who was already in the lead after the first race, made her second attempt confidently and relegated Federica Brignone and Tessa Worley to 2nd and 3rd places.

For Shiffrin it was the first success in the World Cup since his return, and a very emotional one. The 25-year-old burst into tears during the winner’s interview. The unexpected death of her father in February 2020 brought her closer to the end of her career, as she recently revealed.

Swiss women

  • 4. Michelle Gisin +1.20
  • 7. Lara Gut-Behrami +2.09
  • 20. Corinne Suter +3.98
  • 21. Wendy Holdener +4.02
  • 25. Mélanie Meillard +4.76

The Swiss women delivered a strong team performance. Above all, Michelle Gisin was able to convince and lost the podium by only 11 hundredths. Lara Gut-Behrami can also look forward to a top 10 result.

Corinne Suter scored points in the giant slalom world cup for the first time in her career. For Wendy Holdener it was also a disappointment in the third giant slalom. After 26th place in Sölden and elimination on Saturday, Schwyzerin looked only 21st on Monday due to a serious mistake in the final part.

Jasmina Suter (33rd), Camille Rast (35th) and Priska Nufer (39th) failed the decision.

Favorites die in the first race

With Mina Fürst Holtmann (starting position 1), Alice Robinson (5) and Petra Vlhova (6), three giant slalom specialists had to repack their skis early. Robinson and Vlhova even reached the same spot just before the finish line.

Perfect conditions

The second giant slalom in Courchevel was postponed for one day on Sunday due to the amount of fresh snow on the slopes. Conditions on Monday were excellent: good visibility and steep incline.

So it goes

This coming weekend in Val d’Isère there are two downhill races (December 18/19) and a Super-G (20) on the program. Tech specialists will be back on the slopes in Semmering on December 28 (giant slalom) and December 29 (slalom).
