Several people were injured after being shot in Berlin-Kreuzberg
In the early morning of Boxing Day, shots were fired in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The police find several wounded. Heavily armed agents search for the perpetrators. The background is unclear.
(dpa) In Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, several people were probably wounded by gunshots early Saturday morning. The fire department reported that three people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. Rescuers and emergency medics initially treated the injured after the shooting, a fire department spokesman said.
Police had initially reported four injuries. Numerous heavily armed officers were on duty around the scene to search for those involved in the conflict, both wounded and perpetrators. A helicopter was also called in and circled the area.
The crime scene is apparently at a front door on Stresemannstrasse, as reported on the spot by a photographer for the German press agency. Three wounded are said to have been found. The SPD party headquarters is also very close. Police cordoned off the area.
Unclear reasons
Another injured man was pulled from the nearby Landwehr Canal, said to have sustained a leg injury. According to police, the man jumped into the water on his own. Around the Möckernbrücke metro station, which is directly on the Landwehr canal, the police searched the brush on the shore with flashlights.
Initially, the police were unable to provide any background information on the crime. At first there was no further information regarding the ongoing operation.
In Berlin there are always disputes between individual groups or families. More recently, about 10 men attacked a ground-floor apartment and car in Kreuzberg after a 29-year-old was shot.
