In recent weeks, crown hotspots such as Italy, Spain, and the UK have seen cases of children in intensive care due to severe vascular inflammation. These children suffer from the so-called Kawasaki syndrome. There were also several cases in Switzerland.
New York, which is plagued by the coronavirus, now also reports on several children with this syndrome. Coronavirus disease was also found in more than half of the cases.
Health officials issue warning
As the “New York Post” writes, 15 children with this inflammation of the veins were hospitalized in the metropolis between mid-April and the end of May. There may be a connection to the coronavirus, health officials said in a warning Monday night.
The reason: four of the children tested positive for the corona virus. Antibodies to coronaviruses were found in the blood of six others. Consequently, they had already contracted the virus and recovered in the meantime.
WHO examines possible connection
“If the syndrome is suspected, pediatricians should immediately refer their patients to a specialist,” the city’s deputy commissioner of health for disease control told the New York Post. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent permanent damage.
The possible connection between coronavirus and Kawasaki syndrome creates fear in many places. The World Health Organization (WHO) is now investigating whether there is a connection. (support)
Kawasaki syndrome is complicated. High fever, diarrhea, stomach pain, rapid breathing, rash, pink eye, chapped lips, swollen hands and feet. In the worst case, inflammation of the vessels can lead to heart problems and, if left untreated, even death.
The disease mainly affects children under the age of five. With timely diagnosis, Kawasaki syndrome can be successfully combated with antibody therapy. And: the disease is very rare. The number of cases per year can be counted on the fingers of the hand. The syndrome takes its name from Japanese pediatrician Tomisaku Kawasaki, who first diagnosed the disease in children in 1967.
