Good weather with summer temperatures was as much a part of September 2020 as winter weather with cold, snow and rain. The bottom line is that the month that is coming to an end is one of the mildest September months.
Temperatures were 1.6 degrees above the norm between 1981 and 2010, as Meteoschweiz announced Tuesday. Summer weather prevailed in the first half of the month with maximum summer temperatures of 25 degrees or more. At the local level there were hot days with maximum values of more than 30 degrees.
In Ticino up to 16 days of summer were recorded, in Locarno-Monti. In Geneva and Basel it was 13. More than 15 days with 25 degrees or more in September are very rare on both sides of the Alps, as Meteo-Switzerland writes.
A record cold ten days after the last tropical night
It rained very little in the first half of the month. As of September 23, less than 5 percent of precipitation fell locally, which is considered the norm for September. It did not rain at all in Aargau. But September caught up: it ended with lots of rain, snow, and unusually cool temperatures.
Since last Saturday, values have been measured at many stations that were among the five coldest in recent decades. At Nyon / Changins in Vaud, just ten days after the first tropical night in September, the lowest daily maximum temperature since 1965 was recorded at 8.1 degrees.
Because September was still very warm at the beginning of the month, compared to other years, even less colorful autumn leaves can be seen, as recorded by Meteo-Switzerland. On average, foliage begins to fade over a large area from the beginning of October.
