After about an hour in the new environment, three national councilors describe their first impressions at the Federal Councils outpost in Bernexpo. They largely agree: things are more disciplined, but also more distant.
“In the Bundeshaus it is often so loud that your head hurts at night,” recalls Basel National Councilman SP Beat Jans outside the door of the “giant hall” in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency. It’s much quieter here, but the acoustics are getting used to it.
And it addresses a paradox. You have a lot more desk space, but you don’t need it because pretty much everything works online. The contrast to the Bundeshaus with all the mountains of paper on the individual and much smaller desks is obvious. This is also one of the reasons why the hustle is so much higher because documents are constantly being distributed, Jans says.
Jan also expressed fear that long distances could create greater difficulties in trying to speak to the political opponent.
