Sprint race second, second podium: After finishing first on Friday, Corinne Suter finished second behind Sofia Goggia on the second descent from Val d’Isère.

The podium

  • 1. Sofia Goggia (ITA) 1: 44,70
  • 2. Corinne Suter (SUI) +0.24
  • 3. Breezy Johnson (United States) +0.27

On Friday in the first descent, Sofia Goggia was upset by an avoidable driving error in the lower part of the course. 24 hours later the Italian did better and showed impeccable driving in Val d’Isère from the middle stage. Not even Corinne Suter, who was brilliantly presented again, faced Goggia’s time.

However, the Swiss can look forward to her second podium in the second sprint race of the season. Suter lost 24 hundredths to winner Goggia, but was 0.03 seconds faster than Breezy Johnson. As the day before, the American secured third place and once again confirmed her strong performance in training.

The other Swiss women

  • 9. Michelle Gisin +0.77
  • 11. Lara Gut-Behrami +1.04
  • 13. Priska Nufer +1.21
  • 19. Jasmine Flury +1.70
  • 21. Jasmina Suter +1.99
  • 22. Joana Hählen +2.00

Michelle Gisin also has reason to be happy. The Engelberger was much better than the run on Friday and was particularly convincing at the top, where it was one of the best. Towards the end Gisin lost his tension and lost 77 hundredths to Goggia until the end. That was enough for the top 10.

Lara Gut-Behrami put up another solid performance. Ticino lost just over a second with the fastest time to qualify in 11th place. After 13th on Friday, Priska Nufer again showed her potential with 13th on Saturday.

The lie makes Goggia tremble with the initial number 30

Goggia, Suter and Johnson were likely happy with their podium positions when Kajsa Vickhoff Lie almost caused a huge surprise.

The Norwegian lined up a best intermediate time after the next to the bottom of the course, but lost her first place on the podium by a measly 0.06 seconds at the end. However, the jubilation over rank 4 was great for the 22-year-old.

So it goes

After two races, the first women’s sprint weekend of the season will conclude with a Super-G on Sunday.

After the races in France, the focus is again on technical women. In a week, the women’s ski entourage will visit Semmering, Austria, where a slalom and a giant slalom are scheduled.
