On Sunday, September 27, 2020, around 1:20 p.m., a couple of tourists walked from Altenalp in the direction of Ebenalp. When the couple was at an altitude of about 1,550 meters above sea level. Suddenly noticed an avalanche on the hiking trail, the man was able to move out of the avalanche cone area. His 19-year-old girlfriend, on the other hand, was only able to stand in front of a rock about half a meter high on the road and crouched there. The avalanche washed over her.
Another pair of hikers, who had previously passed the tourist couple on the hiking trail and were not buried, raised the alarm and began rescuing the buried victims along with their friend. Rescuers were able to locate the woman with the help of an avalanche probe and finally rescue her from a depth of approximately one meter. The woman suffered from hypothermia and was transferred to a hospital for monitoring.
In addition to the Air Rescue Service (Rega) with two helicopters, the Alpine Rescue East of Switzerland (ARO) with an avalanche dog trainer and the cantonal police were on duty.
