Christian Gross should save Schalke 04 from relegation. The Zurich coach just retired in the summer, now he apparently wants to know again and make the impossible possible.
On this summer’s “SRF” sports landscape, Christian Gross said it was basically time to stop training. However, the 66-year-old didn’t want to completely rule out a possible comeback: “People casually say, ‘Never say never.’ Maybe I just have to stick with that.”
Now should be that time again: Gross returns to the bench after the information from “Bild” and will support Schalke 04 in the relegation battle. The Gelsenkirchen club has yet to confirm the commitment of their new coach. However, Gross should lead the first practice session on Sunday. His contract runs until the end of the season, without an extension clause. The Zurich resident should receive a low basic salary. But if he manages to stay in the league, Gross will be golden. As “Kicker” writes, the no-drop bonus is in the seven-digit range.
He doesn’t have much time to get used to at Schalke. On January 2, Hertha BSC will return to the Bundesliga. Schalke are 29 games without a win in Germany’s upper house. Tasmania Berlin’s negative record is just two games away.
Gross’s second Bundesliga adventure
Gross had his only Bundesliga engagement from 2009 to 2010 for ten months at VfB Stuttgart. At the time, he led the Suevi from the relegation zone to the Europa League, but then had to enter the new season after a false start.
In Stuttgart, Gross also met Jochen Schneider, Schalke’s current sporting director. For Schneider, the Swiss is the preferred candidate after the last time he failed when he signed Manuel Baum to succeed David Wagner. If Gross fails as an emergency assistant, the athletic director can hardly be retained.
Is he the right man for Schalke 04? Gross last worked as the Young Boys coach in European soccer eight years ago. Gross was active in Egypt (Zamalek) and Saudi Arabia (Al-Ahli) until 2020. He celebrated his greatest successes with FC Basel, leading him to four championship and cup titles between 2002 and 2008.
