- An ICE train caused a catenary failure at Bern station.
- Train traffic on the east-west axis is interrupted. There are train cancellations and delays.
- 400 passengers had to be evacuated from two stopped trains.
- The disruption to train traffic is likely to last longer.
Train traffic in the Bern area has been severely disrupted since this morning. Trains from eastern Switzerland are currently unable to enter Bern station. The reason for this is a catenary failure between Bern and Wankdorf, the bottleneck for all trains to Bern.
The entire route between Bern and Wankdorf is closed, SBB announced on request. There will be big failures and deviations. The trains of the diameter lines turn in the suburban stations, sometimes even in Olten. Travelers must travel from west to east via the Jurasüdfuss line, to Bern via Neuchâtel. The connection to the Bernese Oberland is made non-stop in Bern via the Zollikofen-Ostermundigen connection.
It is not known how long the outage lasts. The rectification of the malfunction could definitely continue, said media spokesman Raffael Hirt. Extensive repairs are necessary. Travelers are kindly requested to check the online schedule periodically.
The catenary is on several tracks
The catenary, which was shot down by ICE Basel – Interlaken around 8.30 am, is distributed over several tracks, according to SBB. The line must first be cleaned and reinstalled before the trains can run again.
Why the airline was shot down is part of the ongoing clarification. Or a technical defect on the contact line or on the train may be responsible for this.
Second foul at Schönbühl
An overhead contact line is also damaged in the Bernese suburb of Schönbühl. Therefore, the rail traffic between Burgdorf BE and Bern was restricted accordingly. In Schönbühl, however, the train station operates on a single lane and can be avoided. According to Hirt, the Schönbühl SBB is also fixing the malfunction.
