The fear in spring was great: do we have enough fans? There was a shortage of this in some countries. These should take over the lung function of the patient in case of severe corona disease. At the beginning of the pandemic, around 800 of the 1,400 intensive care beds and 1,000 extra beds were ventilated.
As “NZZ” writes, the dreaded fan shortage has meanwhile turned into a glut. At the start of the pandemic, Switzerland ordered a good 1,500 fans. This means that it has 40 times more stock than last year.
A fan for every intensive care bed
Today Switzerland has a fan for more than every ICU bed. The problem is the personnel, the operation of a ventilator requires a specialist in lungs.
Fan manufacturers around the world reacted and massively expanded their production. Production is said to have increased fivefold. The first orders are already falling. There are so many devices on the market now that demand is likely to collapse in the coming years. (lui)
