Lee Kun-hee passed away at the age of 78, Samsung announced.
Samsung did not provide any information on the exact cause of death.
In his last moments, his family was by his side. The company praised Lee as a “true visionary” whose legacy “would last forever.”
His father, Lee Byung-chul, was the founder of the company, which was initially a mere grocery store. Lee Kun-hee succeeded him as president after his death.
Under his leadership, Samsung became the largest company in South Korea. He was considered the richest South Korean. He suffered a heart attack in 2014 and has had health problems ever since. Therefore, his son assumed the management of the company in practice and became the de facto CEO.
