The president of the United States, Donald Trump (74), declares himself the winner of the elections even before the result is known. That falls ill even with Trump’s friends in Switzerland, like National Councilor Senior Vice President Roger Köppel (55): “It is absolutely irresponsible to declare himself the winner now,” Köppel writes on Twitter. Trump’s behavior is “prohibited.”
Trump accuses the Democrats of wanting to “steal” the elections. In a speech at the White House, he announced that he wanted to stop another recount of votes by the highest court, the Supreme Court.
Martullo waits for Trump
It doesn’t look too bad for the current Trump. His challenger Joe Biden (77) could not achieve a landslide victory contrary to the polls. Instead, there is a neck-and-neck race between the two older men. As four years ago, the duel should be decided in the “Rust Belt” states: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
“I hope that the catastrophe we experienced four years ago will not be repeated,” SP president Mattea Meyer (32) told Blick TV. Trump’s four years in office were “even worse” than he expected. The SP National Councilor is still waiting for Biden to be elected: “Only then can we advance in the areas of climate protection, equality and democracy.”
The “ugliest clown wins”
SP party colleague Jacqueline Badran (58) is more pessimistic. She waits for Biden, but apparently has bet on a Trump election: “I daresay the ugliest, stupid, and nauseating clown wins,” she writes on Twitter. He fears that Biden may not be able to sufficiently mobilize Democratic voters and that his vice presidential candidate, Kamala Harris (56), is more likely to attract Trump voters to the polls.
Politician SVP Magdalena Martullo-Blocher (51) would be happy with a Trump victory. “The election of Mr. Trump would be better for Switzerland”, she is convinced. Under the mandate of the current US president, economic relations between Switzerland and the United States would be strengthened: “Then we could enter directly into the free trade agreement that we have already prepared,” he told Tele Züri. However, talks on a joint free trade agreement had recently stalled under Trump’s leadership.
Green hopes for Ocasio-Cortez
Apparently Green National Councilor Marionna Schlatter (40) has already given up. He is already pinning his hopes on the 2024 presidential elections and on the democratic politics Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (31). She spreads her hashtag “AOC2024” on Twitter.
Counting the votes could take days. In some states in the US, evaluation of votes by mail can only begin on Election Day, causing significant delays. Especially since a particularly high number of citizens voted by letter this year. The SP national advisor, Fabián Molina (30), watched the election without sleeping that night, while tweeting. By the time the end result is available, Molina should have rested well too. (until)
