The A2 between Amsteg and Göschenen is better protected against falling rocks. This costs 17 million francs.
The Gotthard motorway route between Amsteg and Göschenen is one of the most dangerous roads in Switzerland due to rockfall. But the last major repairs to this section were twenty years ago. The federal government is now renovating the A2 on this route from 2021 to 2023. For this, protection measures against natural hazards are essential, as reported by the Federal Highway Office (FEDRO).
Protection dams against falling rocks
Protection dams and rockfall barriers will be expanded and completed. In addition, the existing protective structures between Amsteg and Göschenen are being repaired. In total, these measures cost around 17 million francs. Interventions are particularly needed in the areas of Stotzigwald, Meitschligen, Ägerstein, Dürrwald, Felliboden and Wiler near Gurtnellen.
The section of the motorway between Göschenen and Amsteg is more than 14 kilometers long and overcomes a drop of more than 500 meters. It is one of the most sinister sections of the A2. Large boulders and stones have crashed into the road several times.
Work on the structures for protection against natural hazards has already started this year. Measures against natural risks such as rockslides, avalanches or landslides are part of the comprehensive renovation of the highway section, FEDRO also announced.
The total costs of the Amsteg – Göschenen maintenance project amount to around 100 million francs. Among other things, the pavement will be replaced, tunnels will be shaped, galleries, retaining walls and bridges will be repaired.
