Roche continues to vigorously expand its headquarters in Basel. After a second skyscraper, which is currently being built, a third tower is now planned, again an office skyscraper.

The pharmaceutical company Roche presented projects for a third high-rise office building on Wednesday. The third tower is intended to complement the ensemble on the Rhine side, which previously consisted of two high-rise buildings. Tower number 2, also a high-rise office building, is still under construction, currently the 47th floor has been reached. Completion is scheduled for summer 2023.
The new research and development center in the northern area is also still under construction. It should be ready by fall 2023. Then the old lab buildings on Solitudepromenade will be empty. Instead, according to Wednesday’s announcement, Roche is planning a generous green and open space with loose buildings. A reception building and the third tower (office skyscrapers) will be built in the park. The height and shape of this office building are based on the already constructed office buildings Building 1 and Building 2. The visual triad of the three staggered high-rise buildings should form the center of the location, Roche writes.
Plans developed by Roche in collaboration with Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron will serve as the basis for the redesign. The development plan shows two buildings, a low one in the middle of the area and a skyscraper on Grenzacherstrasse, the shape and height of which is based on the existing skyscrapers. The maximum height of this third tower is 221 meters. In addition to the buildings, an underground car park will be created with a state-of-the-art charging infrastructure for electric mobility, which can only be used for bicycles and electric cars.
Roche is currently investing billions in the Basel location, and not just buildings. The company had already announced in 2014 that it would make around 3 billion available for site development in Basel by 2024. The construction of the first skyscraper cost 550 million francs. The cost of the research center under construction is around 1.2 billion Swiss francs. Specific quantities have not yet been delivered for the new project. The third tower is likely to be a bit more expensive than the first skyscraper.
Roche achieved sales of CHF 61.5 billion in 2019 with around 98,000 employees worldwide.
