In a coordinated police operation, 13 suspected participants in a robbery at a money transporter were arrested Tuesday. The operation was carried out by the Vaud cantonal police, together with the Lyon criminal police and a special unit against organized crime.
Police arrested five people in the canton of Vaud and eight in France, according to the canton of Vaud police. The detainees are suspected of having participated in various roles in the attack on a delivery truck belonging to a private money transport company in Mont-sur-Lausanne in June 2019.
The first suspect was discovered in 2019
In the summer of 2019, a suspect was arrested in Spain at the request of the Vaud Central Prosecutor’s Office. The Frenchman from the Lyon region was extradited to Switzerland in August and is still in detention. The investigation continues to determine the role of the suspects.
The attackers blocked the money transporter in the Mont-sur-Lausanne industrial zone with several vehicles. The messengers were forced to leave the vehicle at gunpoint. After that, they set fire to several vehicles and escaped with some of the money.
Sensational series
The attack was not the first of its kind on Vaud soil. A year earlier, a robbery had been committed on a money transporter in Mont-sur-Lausanne. Less than a month ago, police arrested seven suspects in connection with a robbery of two money transporters in La Sarraz VD in August 2019.
Between 2017 and 2019 there were more attacks following the same pattern in Daillens (December 2019), Chavornay (February 2018) and Nyon (May 2017). The perpetrators’ approach was always the same: the thieves threatened the couriers with firearms, blew up the delivery truck to get the money, and shot the vehicles before they fled to neighboring France.
After the series, the canton of Vaud took new security measures. Cash can only be transported in heavy armored vehicles. The amount of money is limited to ten million francs. (SDA / noo)
