The word “war” is not often used in statements by political candidates in the United States, at least not to describe the mood in your own country. But the weekend was in a statement from Joe Biden. “We must not become a country that makes war on itself,” warned the Democrat. “A country that accepts that they kill fellow Americans who do not agree.”

And in the subsequent sentence, Biden also clearly stated who he blames for America being in this situation: “This is the America President Trump wants.” Judging by the fact that Biden had carefully avoided uttering the acting president’s name even once in his party’s speech in Congress, it was a remarkably sharp and outspoken attack.

The course of events is still unclear

With the statement, Biden responded to violent clashes between left-wing protesters and right-wing Trump supporters in Portland, Oregon over the weekend. A man named Aaron Jay Danielson had been shot, who apparently also appeared under the name Jay Bishop and belonged to or was close to a right-wing militia called “Patriot Prayer.” He was armed and dressed in military clothing in Portland. The shooter is said to be a man who describes himself as an anti-fascist and belongs to the left wing scene in Portland.

The fatal incident in Portland was the second in a few days. The week before, a 17-year-old vigilante in the city of Kenosha, Wisconsin, shot dead two men who had participated in a “Black Lives Matter” demonstration. In all cases, the exact course of events has not yet been clarified. It is not yet clear to what extent the shots were part of direct confrontations between perpetrators and victims, either with the intent to kill or in self-defense.

In his statement, Biden attempted to counter the Republicans’ unproven accusation that he was somehow sympathetic to the violence, looting and arson, which have accompanied numerous Black Lives Matter protests in recent weeks. I condemn violence of all kinds and of all, whether from the left or the right, ”Biden wrote. “If you go out to riot, it is not a peaceful protest.”

These are clearer words than the president has ever heard. In a tweet over the weekend, Trump praised his supporters, who arrived in downtown Portland in a convoy of cars, as “great patriots.”. It was foreseeable that there would be clashes between the Trump people and the counter-protesters: Portland is known as a left-wing bastion, the convoy was clearly intended as a provocation. Trump then sent a tweet Sunday morning expressing his regret over the death of the Portland militiaman. “Rest in peace, Jay!” The president wrote.

Trump wants to speak to Kenosha police representatives on Tuesday and inspect the damage caused by the recent riots. The riots in the city began after a police operation in which a white policeman shot a black man in the back several times at point-blank range. The victim survived, but is likely to remain paralyzed.

“Trump encourages violence”

Biden delivered a nearly half-hour speech Monday afternoon in Pittsburgh on the charged mood in the United States and accused Trump of ineptitude and failure, both in the crown crisis and in the reaction to the violent protests in course in American cities. “This president cannot end the violence,” Biden said in a room at Carnegie Mellon University in front of the cameras, but without an audience. It does not improve the situation, but it gets worse and worse. Trump failed to protect the United States from the rapid spread of the corona virus. Now he is betting on “Law and order”, and following a policy of fear: “The more chaos and violence, the better it will be for Trump to be re-elected.”

In his statement over the weekend, Biden made clear that he gives the president a substantial degree of complicity in the violence of the past few days. “What does President Trump think will happen if he continues to ignite the flames of hatred and division in our society?” Biden wrote. “He carelessly encourages violence.”

And then Biden again used the word that, in his opinion, apparently aptly describes the situation in the United States two months before the election: Trump “may believe that the war on our streets improves his chances of re-election, but that doesn’t nothing to do with presidential leadership – or even simple human compassion.
