The Richterich company from Laufen BL is now ditching the name of its most famous sweet, the Mohrenkopf. “Foam Mohrenkopf” will no longer appear on the gold packaging of the traditional Laufen company’s best-known confectionery, Richterich. There should only be the name of the family business, reports the ‘Basler Zeitung’.
According to its own statements, Richterich AG is reacting to criticism last summer. Critics complained that the name “Mohrenkopf” was racist. Cécile Grüninger, Richterich spokesperson: “It is a pragmatic decision not to print the word Mohrenkopf on the gold foil anymore.” Has the company given in to public pressure? “We are simply responding to the wishes of some customers,” he says.
“Nothing to do with racism”
In June, Manor cleaned Richterich’s “carrot heads” off the shelf. Apparently they are now available again. With the new packaging. However, according to Richterich, many customers have spoken out in favor of keeping the name.
At that time, the Othmar Richterich company was surprised by the sudden classification of its goods. The name is a reference to the historical nickname of the Laufen family. “We were the Moors,” managing director and owner Marianne Richterich told BLICK. “The name has nothing to do with racism.”
Dubler stays with it
On the website, the sweet is still called Mohrenkopf. The Dubler company, the best-known producer in Switzerland, still calls their sweets Mohrenkopf. No bad conscience. (pbe)
