“Foam Mohrenkopf” will no longer appear on the gold packaging of the traditional Laufen company’s best-known confectionery, Richterich. At this point, only the name of the family business should appear, “bz Basel” reported on Tuesday.
Richterich AG is reacting to criticism last summer. The name “Mohrenkopf” is racist, according to critics. Richterich’s spokeswoman, Cécile Grüninger, spoke to the “bz Basel” about the change in chocolate packaging: “It is a pragmatic decision not to print the word Mohrenkopf on the gold foil.” When asked if the company fell asleep under the pressure of public criticism, Grüninger replied: “We are simply responding to the wishes of some customers.”
After Manor cleared Richterich’s “carrot heads” from the shelf in June, the sweet dish at the Liestaler Manor branch has been available again since Monday, according to “bz Basel.” Of course, with a new look and with neutral letters.
However, according to Grüninger, a spokesperson for Richterich, there were many more voices wanting to keep the name. That is why the designation “Mohrenkopf” has not yet completely disappeared. On the boxes and bags in the factory store in Laufen and also on the company’s website it still says: Foam Mohrenkopf.
