It should be possible to perform 50,000 corona tests per day with the recently approved rapid tests. Together with the conventional ones, Switzerland can thus increase its capacity to 80,000 tests per day. This could be the decisive advantage in the fight against the coronavirus.
Sufficient testability is one of the most important prerequisites for containing the pandemic: the earlier an infection is detected, the faster the appropriate protective measures can be taken, and the more successfully the spread of the virus can be prevented. That is why the new rapid tests have an advantage over conventional tests.
Faster, but less reliable
While those previously examined had to wait 24 hours for the result, those affected know within 15 minutes with the rapid test that they are infected and can take steps to protect their environment immediately after the test.
However, unlike conventional tests, rapid test results are less reliable. In the worst case, test people receive a negative result even though they are infected with the coronavirus. These supposedly healthy people can spread the virus without realizing it.
For this reason, according to the Federal Office of Public Health, the new rapid tests should only be used for people who actually already have symptoms of the disease but who do not belong to a risk group. The new rapid tests should be available starting Monday at existing Covid testing centers, doctors’ offices and pharmacies.
