The airline industry wants to free itself from the misery of the crown with millions of passenger tests and the rapid spread of vaccines. Before the tipping point, companies would have to accept unprecedented losses, the world aviation association IATA warned Tuesday at its annual meeting on the Internet.

“We must not waste time,” said IATA chief Alexandre de Juniac, who had announced his resignation the day before. The former head of British Airways parent company IAG, Willie Walsh, was elected his successor on April 1, 2021.

According to the association, airlines face even bigger losses this year and next than previously feared. In the current year, a record loss of $ 118.5 billion will accrue and thus about $ 34 billion more than previously thought across the industry, reported IATA Chief Economist Brian Pearce.
