A pilot of a fighter plane is accused of having been able to save the plane in an accident.
A rare type of trial begins today in Aarau. A fighter jet pilot who crashed into an F / A-18 in 2015 stands in front of Military Court 2. The man was able to save himself with the ejection seat. However, the expensive plane was destroyed.
The plane lost altitude massively
It should have been normal air combat training. FA 18 started in Payerne on a fall morning five years ago. Two F5 Tigers, acting as opponents, flew out from Sion. The training took place on the French Jura.
At first it came out normally. The F / A-18 pilot wanted to fly to the right at full speed to chase a tiger. However, as he did so, the plane began to turn to the left. At an altitude of 2,280 meters, the pilot finally received notice of a so-called stall, which causes the aircraft to lose a lot of altitude.
Powered ejection seat
A fatal problem, but one that could have been controlled with the right countermeasures. It would have, because according to the investigation report, the pilot did not do this enough. A few seconds later, at an altitude of 1,855 meters, the man had operated the ejection seat, although the plane could have been saved at that time.
Then it happened that the pilot landed with his parachute and the fighter plane crashed into a field. The man is now charged because he is said to have flown the machine too low in air combat training. This is a negligent breach of the service regulations.
Valued at about 50 million francs
More serious are the charges of negligent abuse and waste of military equipment. Here, with an F / A-18, something very expensive that taxpayers paid for was destroyed.
The machine was still worth around 50 million francs. Negotiations will take place over the next three days on the extent to which the pilot can be held liable for the damage.
