A recently elected Republican congressman from the US state of Louisiana died after becoming infected with corona at the age of 41. “Covid-19 took Congressman-elect (Luke) Letlow away from us too soon,” wrote State Governor John Bel Edwards on Twitter Wednesday night. Letlow’s spokesman, Andrew Bautsch, confirmed the death of the politician in the US newspaper “News Star.”
According to the Washington Post, Luke Letlow is the highest-ranking American politician to die of Covid-19. It was not until December that Letlow prevailed in a second round to represent his constituency in Congress. He should have been sworn in on Sunday.
Letlow went public with her corona infection on December 18. First, the politician quarantined at home. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to the hospital.
Letlow leaves behind his wife and two children, according to US media. Numerous American politicians expressed their condolences on Twitter. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, about 19.5 million people in the US have been infected with the pathogen Sars-CoV-2 and more than 338,000 people have died. In absolute terms, that is more than in any other country in the world.
