Rega performs a fifth fewer missions during the holidays

From December 24 to January 2, the helicopter operations center of the Swiss Air Rescue Service (Rega) organized around 380 helicopter missions in Switzerland for people in need, seriously ill or injured. That’s about 20 percent fewer deployments compared to the number of deployments in the same time period in previous years, Rega reported.

In general, the number of deployed helicopter crews reflects the weather conditions, leisure activities and travel activities of the population and foreign tourists in Switzerland and is therefore subject to natural fluctuations, depending on the balance. Rega helicopter crews are deployed about 380 times during the holidays.

The missions covered the wide spectrum of Rega’s operations: crews were on duty for acutely ill patients, for transfer flights from regional hospitals to central hospitals, and after traffic, work and winter sports incidents.

Rega’s helicopter operations center in constant contact with hospitals

In view of the current situation in hospitals, the task of Rega’s operations center in the background is particularly important, the message said. This supports crews during their missions: for example, the Rega emergency medic reports the desired destination hospital to the Rega Operations Center after the patient has received initial medical attention. Then, it is the task of Rega’s operations managers, in consultation with the hospitals and taking into account their current situation, to find the best solution for the patient and register them with the corresponding hospital.

The Rega Helicopter Operations Center not only coordinates all Rega helicopters in Switzerland and provides the next suitable crew: Operations managers also support crews during ongoing operations, constantly providing them with relevant information and coordinating with those who are alarming.
