The Spanish capital is the first fully cordoned off European metropolis. The police control all entry and exit roads. There is an entry ban for foreigners and tourists, millions of citizens cannot leave their city.
Restaurants and bars, which in Spain usually don’t fill up until late at night, have to close early at 10 pm, the time when locals usually start their dinner.
“The situation in Madrid is tremendously bad”, recently warned the president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez (48). Since the weekend, drastic new restrictions have been implemented in Madrid and nine suburbs, placing the area in a new state of emergency.
The death toll increases dramatically
The 3.3 million inhabitants of the capital can still leave their homes and there is no curfew. But only those who have valid reasons can leave the restricted area, such as an out-of-town job.
The reference value of the so-called seven-day incidence in the capital’s area of influence is currently 234 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Individual sources of infection even show more than 600 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The death toll is also rising sharply again after the death toll began to decline in the summer. In one week, 260 crown-related deaths were reported in Madrid.
“Maximum alert” in Paris
Due to the very tense situation in Corona, the “maximum alert level” will be declared on Monday in and around Paris. New security measures could, among other things, trigger the closure of cafes, the French news agency AFP reported Sunday evening, citing the office of French Prime Minister Jean Castex. On the other hand, restaurants could remain open with greater precautionary measures from Corona.
The step is not a surprise. Health Minister Olivier Véran (40) said late last week that the situation in the capital and the suburbs had recently deteriorated rapidly.
More than 10,000 new infections every day
In the fight against the corona pandemic, the “maximum alert level” has so far been applied in the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe and in Marseille. In the southern French port city, restaurants and bars have already had to close; there have been massive protests against this. In Paris, bars close at 10pm, restaurants can stay open longer. However, they are only allowed to serve alcohol in connection with a meal.
The new measures will be presented on Monday by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and will initially apply for 15 days, the agency reported. France recorded 12,565 new corona infections nationwide in 24 hours, as authorities announced late at night. The day before, there were 16,972 new infections, significantly more. France has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 32,000 people have died so far. (kes / SDA)
