- Stan Wawrinka (ATP 20) cannot beat Alexander Zverev (ATP 7) on the fourth attempt and is eliminated in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy.
- For Lausanne, the season has ended after the defeat by 3: 6, 6: 7 (1: 7) against the German.
- Zverev now faces world number two Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
It was again a Stan Wawrinka game, where the Swiss would have needed more. Especially since Alexander Zverev did not seem in top form and, especially in the initial phase, repeatedly touched his left thigh. But for Wawrinka it was once again a game of missed opportunities.
I have 3 breaks in the first set
In the first lap, the Lausanne man did not find the rhythm. Although he was able to immediately react to the break at 2: 3, but with 2 more service losses, the set for the world number 20 was over. Zverev was particularly convincing with his serve: More than 80 percent of the first downs ended on the field, in 75 percent of the cases he made the point.
Wawrinka serves winning the 2nd set
In the second deal, Wawrinka was able to improve, but couldn’t get rid of his inconsistency. A game rich in variations and great points alternated over and over again with inexplicable and unavoidable errors. This was also the case when Wawrinka was able to serve with a score of 5: 4 to win the second set. Wawrinka was on the trigger and led 30: 0 before having to give up 4 points in a row and thus conceding the re-break to 5: 5.
Zverev got 3 games in a row, so the tie-break had to decide. And this became a clear issue in favor of the 23-year-old German. Wawrinka conceded 2 mini-breaks in a row early on and quickly fell behind 5-0.
Zverev now against Nadal
Zverev thus retained the advantage in the fourth game against Wawrinka. In St. Petersburg (2016), Miami (2017) and at this year’s Australian Open, Wawrinka was always able to win a set.
In the semifinals, Zverev will now face Rafael Nadal. The Mallorcan again showed problems and had to face his Spanish compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta throughout the distance. But in the end, the world number two prevailed with 4: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 1.
In the second Paris-Bercy semifinal, Russian Daniil Medvedev and Canadian Milos Raonic face off.
