Group A: Portugal fought again
Portugal also showed many problems in the third match of the World Cup qualification. The 2016 European champions even lagged behind in Luxembourg, which surprisingly had beaten Ireland. In injury time in the first half, Diogo Jota was able to equalize for the big favorite. Cristiano Ronaldo put the Portuguese on the road to victory in the 50th minute: it was his first goal after 4 international matches without any personal sense of achievement. Joao Palhinha made the final score 10 minutes before the end.
- Azerbaijan 1-2 Serbia
After the narrow defeat to Portugal (0: 1), Azerbaijan smelled the sensation against Serbia. It was thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic (once again) that the Serbs traveled home with 3 points in their luggage. The Fulham player scored both goals, the decisive 2-1 in the 81st minute. Mitrovic has already scored 5 of Serbia’s 7 goals in the World Cup qualifiers.
Group G: Netherlands with 4 goals in 10 minutes
- Gibraltar – Netherlands 0-7
Holland needed almost half time against the “football midget” to open the skore. Just 4 minutes before the break the top guests scored the opening goal through Steven Berghuis. Before that, Gibraltar goalkeeper Daley Coleing stood out several times. With 4 goals between 55 and 65, the Dutch, who are now in second place, made it all clear.
The Turks, opponents of the Swiss group in the summer (June 20), gave up points in their third match for the first time. Turkey lost a 2-0, 3-1 lead against Latvia. Latvia’s 2: 3 after an hour was a co-production of two legionnaires from the Swiss Super League: Lugano defender Marcis Oss hung up, while Sion’s Roberts Uldrikis took off. Substitute Davis Ikaunieks made it 3: 3 in the 79th minute. The Turks had to do without a handful of players due to positive corona tests.
Group E: Belgium celebrate victory
Belgium fulfilled the obligatory task against the foreign sovereign and celebrated the 2nd victory in the 3rd match of the World Cup qualification. At halftime, the “Red Devils” had a 4-0 lead. Hans Vanaken and Leandro Trossard met twice.
Wales, who will be Switzerland’s first opponent at the European Championship on June 12, won their first victory in their second game. Daniel James scored the golden goal with 8 minutes remaining. The Czechs, who lost first place in the table to Belgium, had to settle for one man less from minute 49 after the controversial red card against Patrik Schick.
