At the Formula 1 premiere in Portimao, Lewis Hamilton secured his 92nd victory, a record.

The podium

  • 1. Lewis Hamilton (GBR, Mercedes)
  • 2. Valtteri Bottas (FIN, Mercedes)
  • 3. Max Verstappen (NED, Red Bull)

Lewis Hamilton did it: with his 92nd success, he is the only record winner ahead of Michael Schumacher in Formula 1. No driver has won more races. But the victory in the Portuguese GP was not a sure success.

On the starting laps, characterized by close duels, many overtaking maneuvers and changes of position, the six-time world champion had to give up the lead to Carlos Sainz first. However, he couldn’t stay on top for long, Valtteri Bottas was too strong in the Mercedes.

By lap 20 the time had come: Hamilton grabbed his teammate Bottas on the long straight, then steadily widened his lead and the race took its usual shape. Hamilton drove a 25.5 second difference over Bottas to the finish. Behind the Mercedes drivers, Max Verstappen secured third place.

Leclerc surprised at the Ferrari

Charles Leclerc stepped directly behind the podium. Monegasse, 23, had already made the most of his car in qualifying as fourth and confirmed it in the race. It was worse for Sebastian Vettel. The German, who started from 15th on the grid, secured a World Championship point as 10th.

Raikkonen just lost points

In the wet conditions in Portugal, especially at the start, veteran Kimi Räikkönen triumphed on his soft tires on the Alfa Romeo. The 41-year-old Finn climbed to sixth place, but narrowly missed World Cup points in eleventh place. His teammate Antonio Giovinazzi was unable to comment on the points in 15th place.

So it goes

In a week, a race in Italy is on the program of the Formula 1 circus, more precisely in Emilia Romagna. There the thirteenth race of the “premier class” will take place. After the Italian GP and the Tuscan GP, it is already the third Formula 1 stay in Italy this season.
