Pope Francis needs a new deputy for Switzerland
Archbishop Thomas E. Gullickson (70) has been the Vatican’s official representative in Switzerland as nuncio since 2015. For reasons of age, he offered to resign; Pope Francis accepted the offer. The American church diplomat is leaving a country whose salvation he sees in jeopardy.

New Years Eve will be your last official business day at the Apostolic Nunciature. His Excellency the Nuncio Thomas E. Gullickson leaves the Vatican embassy in Bern. The fact that the Pope needs a new deputy for Switzerland and Liechtenstein was not yet publicly known. Archbishop Gullickson turned 70 in August, and upon reaching this age limit, he offered to resign for the nuncio. “Pope Francis responded to my request immediately and set my last business day for December 31, 2020,” Gullickson wrote in one of our editors’ posts for the conservative Catholic organization Pro Ecclesia Switzerland.
