Good Morning Britain was on fire. But the flames roared against me. “This is how Piers Morgan (55) describes his final hours on the British morning show. After the moderator achieved record viewership ratings through his comments on the Prince Harry (36) interview and the Duchess Meghan (39) with Oprah Winfrey (67), quit her job shortly after.
In a detailed comment in the “Mail on Sunday”, Morgan has now written about his controversial departure. ITV editor-in-chief Kevin Lygo (63) gave him a choice: “Either you apologize or you have to leave ‘GMB.'” The presenter had previously announced on the show that he did not believe a word of Duchess Meghan’s statements. Because she did that shortly after a clip in which the former actress spoke of being suicidal in the royal palace, the statement flew around her ears. Over 57,000 complaints were received against Morgan, one of them from Meghan herself. .
“I don’t believe Meghan Markle”
Morgan states: In fact, he considered apologizing. For a whole night he weighed his options. In the end, however, it was clear to him that he had to resign: “I will not apologize for not believing Meghan Markle, because I really do not believe Meghan Markle. And in a free and democratic society, I should be allowed not to believe in someone and say I don’t believe him. ”
There were too many inconsistencies in the interview for Morgan. She couldn’t understand why Meghan claims that her son Archie (1) was reserved the title of prince because of the color of his skin: “This is complete nonsense. He is not a prince because the monarch’s great-grandchildren technically do not receive the titles of prince or princess. Unless they’re in direct line with the throne. This rule applies regardless of the ethnic origin of the child’s mother. “
Questions in the suicide confession
The moderator cannot and does not want to believe that a member of the royal palace denied Meghan help after she revealed that she no longer wanted to live. “So why didn’t Harry offer him the urgent help he needed?” Asks Morgan. “He is a member of some of the UK’s largest mental health charities and has in the past proudly spoken of seeking discreet help himself.”
In fact, he was prepared for the wave of outrage that hit him after the broadcasts. “I’ve always believed that when you negotiate, you have to be able to accept it,” says Morgan. But her three children were also bombarded on social media. “They sent me screenshots of poisonous attacks and threats of violence against me that made my stomach turn. Especially since the police are already investigating the death threats against me and my eldest son. ”
Morgan regrets leaving the studio
Still, he does not regret his decision. What he regrets, however, is his reaction to criticism from his “Good Morning Britain” colleague Alex Beresford (40). After he suggested that Morgan only criticized Meghan so harshly for not responding to her text messages in 2018, the host stormed out of the studio. “I don’t care if guests try to make a name for themselves by attacking me. But I never would have expected it from someone on my own team, ”says Morgan about it. “When I realized that I could say something that I would regret, I decided to leave the studio to calm down.” He knew that in hindsight that was not the right move: “If I think about it now, I shouldn’t have done it.” (klm)
