Police in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, shot a 27-year-old black man. The man was armed with a knife and did not drop it despite repeated requests, a police spokesman said.
The suspect had approached police, after which two officers shot him multiple times, the spokesman told a local television station. After the incident Monday afternoon, riots broke out Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Several policemen were injured and there were arrests.
“The incident raises questions”
Mayor Jim Kenney said, referring to the incident, which was filmed by passersby with smartphones: “I saw the video of this tragic incident. It poses difficult questions that need an answer. “
Police Chief Danielle Outlaw promised a thorough investigation of the case to clarify “the many unanswered questions.” Police had arrived at the scene in West Philadelphia due to a domestic violence incident involving the eventual victim.
In the United States, there have been nationwide protests against racism and police violence since late May. The trigger for the protests was the brutal murder of unarmed African American George Floyd during a police operation in the city of Minneapolis.
