Peters wins the 8th stage – 1st stage of the Pyrenees: Yates defends the sport “Maillot jaune”

  • Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) defends the “Maillot jaune” in the first Pyrenean stage of the Tour de France.
  • Nans Peters (AG2R) wins the difficult eighth stage from Cazères-sur-Garonne to Loudenvielle.
  • Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) loses a lot of time and is left out of the race for the overall victory.

When the favorites in the general classification had to do without assistants before the last promotion, Adam Yates’ yellow jersey seemed to be gone. But then the favorites Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), Egan Bernal (Ineos) and Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) could not make a decisive gap and Yates rose again. Only the young Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) put the cards on the table and was able to recover a few seconds from Yates until the end.

Peters ensures prestigious success

After Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep) with Nans Peters (AG2R), a second Frenchman wins a stage. The 26-year-old had long led the way with Ilnur Sakarin (CCC), but he decisively distanced himself from the Russians on a relegation and then took the win home with confidence. For Peters it was the first stage victory in the Tour de France.

Pinot is falling behind

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), before the start of the Tour, France’s greatest hope in the general classification, will not win the Tour de France this year either. The 30-year-old was unable to keep up with the other favorites on the penultimate climb to Port de Balès due to injury and lost more than 25 minutes to his compatriot Peters to the finish.

Together with his team captain Pinot, the two Swiss Sébastien Reichenbach and Stefan Küng crossed the finish line. Michael Schär (CCC) and Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) could not put any accent either.

So it goes

Tomorrow the next difficult stage is scheduled in the Pyrenees (starting at 2:10 p.m. live, starting at 3 p.m. on SRF info). On the 153 kilometers from Pau to Laruns, the riders will complete 2 category 1 climbs. In particular, the steep ascent of Col de Marie Blanque before descending to the finish line in Laruns is extremely demanding.
