Compulsory schools will reopen on May 11, as decided by the Federal Council. But how they do it depends on the cantons. The associated uncertainty is reflected in the different approach: some start with the full program, others with half classes, others need even more time to decide.
An overview of the cantons’ decisions, in alphabetical order:
Aargau: Already in the morning, the canton announced that it would start operating its schools again on May 11 according to regular hours. Class camps and school trips no longer take place this school year. There is a Matura written exam for this.
Appenzell Ausserrhoden: The canton will start school on May 11. So completely normal schedule.
Appenzell Rhodes interior: No information yet.
Basel Country: The canton awaits all students in the school classroom on May 11. After all, the school is the “personal meeting place,” he says in a message. High school graduates do not have to meet for the final exam – this has been canceled.
Basel city Basel City does the same as Basel-Landschaft: all students must start on May 11, according to normal class times. “We want as much normality as possible,” says the director of education. This does not include school trips and camps – they are canceled. Matura’s exam is also canceled.
Bern A “careful” entry into the canton of Bern: on May 11 and 12 there will be middle classes so that everyone can practice hygiene measures. Uncertainties should also be addressed after distance learning. High school graduates run away without exam.
Freiburg: The canton will report on May 1.
Geneva Geneva students will return to school part-time starting May 11 in the morning or afternoon, in middle classes. The measure is applied for two weeks at the primary level and for four weeks at the orientation cycle level. Regularly, it will continue from May 25.
Glarus Full classes and full tuition: in Glarus, on May 11, there are “as far as possible” without exception.
Graubünden: At Graubünden it has only been decided that written enrollment exams will be held and that school will start on May 11th. How will you communicate only on May 1.
Law: From May 11 to 25, the Jurassic schools are organized in alternate half classes every day. Therefore, a child will go to school on Monday and then on Wednesday. The directors will determine the groups. Matura’s examination is completely dispensed with.
Alfalfa Elementary school and lower secondary school classes 1 and 2 begin on May 11, high schools on June 8, all in full classes. This also applies to graduates of the school who have to take the written exam.
Neuchâtel: The canton begins with half classes, alternating in the mornings and afternoons during cycles 1 and 2, until May 25. Cycle 3 students only return to class on this date. The protection of the individual must have priority, says the canton.
Nidwalden: The canton will report on May 1.
Obwalden: No information yet, except there will be written enrollment tests.
St. Gall Surprise in St. Gallen: Although the virus has not particularly affected it so far, the canton begins with half classes for four weeks. In this phase, the “learning process lasts from one week to two weeks”. However, distance learning no longer takes place. Therefore, there is less school, except for graduates: they have to take the written exam.
Schaffhausen: From kindergarten to high school I: Beginning May 11, everyone returns to school regularly. The cantonal task force decided to do this, although not all “contingencies” will be resolved in the early days.
Schwyz: Like most cantons in central Switzerland, Schwyz is also making full progress. Complete classes, complete school. And there will also be written enrollment tests.
Solothurn: Solothurn will also begin on May 11, although “under strict security requirements.” Distance education, however, continues to be offered primarily for the middle school.
Ticino: Even the battered Ticino will bring students back to school starting May 11. But here the municipalities can request exceptions if they have organizational problems.
Thurgau: School begins May 11 according to a normal schedule. Activities with a lot of contact are avoided, the children stay mainly in the class, instead of swimming there are sports classes. There should also be as few adults as possible on the school premises. Graduates are expected to take the written exam.
Uri: Uri is also planning to start a full program. There will also be written enrollment tests. Uri promises more information on May 1.
Vaud: The Canton of Vaud decided to gradually resume compulsory education from May 11. Classes 1P to 8P (from 4 to 12 years old) have face-to-face classes in small groups and alternate every day until May 25. For years 9S to 12S (12 to 15-16 years old), back to school is also done in small groups until early June.
Valais The week of May 11 begins in half classes, alternating with one group on Monday and Tuesday, the other on Thursday and Friday. This will facilitate the learning of preventive measures, explained the educational service. The return to normality is scheduled for May 18. In the orientation cycle, half-class lessons last at least four weeks. Traditional field trips are canceled.
Train: To the parents’ dismay, the canton only reported on May 5 how schools started six days later.
Zurich Zurich is receiving “step by step”: there are two groups for classes of 15 or more students. In most cases, this means that part of the distance learning continues. This is likely to be the case until June 8, even in hoarding. School trips and camps are canceled until summer vacation; graduates are not examined.
