The former political elite suffered a major defeat in the Kosovo parliamentary elections. The left-wing nationalist Vetevendosje party has won with its anti-corruption program. It could roughly double the number of seats.
It was more of a referendum than an election. With their ballot for the Vetevendosje party, the people voted against the rampant corruption in the country. They rejected the politicians who ruled Kosovo for 20 years and who became rich in the process. These politicians did not seem to care that the vast majority in the country live in unemployment and poverty, and only see prospects in emigration.
Kicked out of the office by the old ropes
The great dissatisfaction with these conditions made the Vetevendosje party the strongest force and its boss Albin Kurti the head of government in the last parliamentary elections less than a year and a half ago. But after just 50 days, he was ousted from office last spring by the old ropes with the help of US President Trump.
That definitely broke the barrel, especially with the youngsters. Now Kurti returns, with a result twice as good and should go back to being head of government. Now it is only a few seats short of an absolute majority and should find the necessary support from national minorities.
The pumping of state funds should stop
Kurti’s expectations are high: he must make sure the pumping of state funds into private pockets stops soon. If his team gets into the same waters as the old one, then voters will flee from him as fast as they ran towards him, that’s what many political observers in Kosovo say.
But there is also the possibility that Kurti will lose his position again before he shows what he can do. Already in the spring, the old ropes teams have another chance to let it fail. Then a new head of state must be elected and that requires a two-thirds majority among the deputies. If this does not happen, the parliament must be re-elected immediately.
