- In France, the number of corona diseases is increasing faster and faster.
- There were more than 18,700 new cases on Wednesday alone. A new record.
- Now the government has assigned four more cities to the highest alert level, which already applies to France’s two largest metropolises: Marseille and the capital region, Paris.
Lyon, Lille, Grenoble and Saint-Etienne: as of Saturday, the maximum Covid alarm will also apply in these cities and their agglomerations. This means that bars and cafes will be closed, private gatherings on public property are limited to ten people until further notice. Private parties are also restricted, like weddings.
First improvements to the situation
Similar restrictions are emerging for other cities. Early next week the government will examine and decide whether the higher alert level is also necessary for Toulouse and Montpellier, Health Minister Olivier Véran said.
He also mentioned improvements, for example in the great agglomeration of Marseille-Aix en Provence. Two weeks ago, it was the first area of the continent to be on high alert. Véran said the government would not withdraw these measures for at least a week. And only if a change in trend is confirmed.
Avoid the jojo effect
You want to avoid a yo-yo effect. Developments would always come late. Anyone who is admitted to an intensive care unit today is usually infected two weeks ago. For this reason, the first hospital organizations are already beginning to prepare for bottlenecks in intensive care units.
In the Paris region, for example, 40 per cent of places in intensive care units are already occupied by Covid 19 patients. Now local hospitals have started to postpone less urgent operations to create capacity reserves.
