The world number 1 conceded a blow 2: 6, 1: 6 against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in Vienna. Dominic Thiem also fails.

Big surprise at the ATP tournament in Vienna. Novak Djokovic was clearly defeated by Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 42) of Italy in the quarter-finals with 2: 6, 1: 6. On Wednesday Djokovic had secured his No. 1 spot with his win over Borna Coric until the end of the year.

I can live with this result and look forward to the next chapter.

Sonego fearless and flawless

For Djokovic it was only the second real loss in the 2020 tennis year after bankruptcy in the French Open final against Rafael Nadal. Only once in his career has the Serbian won just three games in a hard court match: at the 2005 Australian Open against Marat Safin.

Djokovic was not too disappointed after the humiliation. You have come to Vienna with a goal and you have achieved it. “I can live with this result and I look forward to the next chapter,” says the 33-year-old.

Sonego could hardly believe his luck. “I played the best game of my life today,” said the 25-year-old, summing up his performance after the game. In the semifinals he meets Daniel Evans, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov.

Rublew defeats Thiem

With Dominic Thiem, the hometown hero and defending champion also had to say goodbye. The visibly battered US Open winner lost to Andrej Rublew of Russia in straight sets. Rublew could celebrate his fifth (!) Title this shortened season in Vienna.
