His name said it all: Hanf-Ueli was a tireless fighter for the legalization of cannabis. Its long struggle and media appearances made it the original city of Zurich.

Hans Ulrich Flückiger has now died at the age of 62, how “20 minutes” reported. For a long time she had lived in a nursing home and suffered from throat cancer. According to the list of reported deaths from the city of Zurich, he died in mid-August.

Hanf-Ueli has run in elections time and again in recent years. On several occasions he tried as a non-party to make the leap to the council, but his candidacies were not successful. In the run-up to the 2006 municipal elections, the TA wrote: “He fought for cannabis liberalization and won a coup in the 2003 National Council elections when he received a staggering 8,748 votes.” But Hanf-Ueli was always denied the choice of Bern. In 2019, his name was missing from the National Council election lists for the first time in a long time.

Fighters for the rights of the marginalized

People around the hemp legalization initiative recall an unconventional personality with sometimes noisy appearances on podiums.

Hanf-Ueli ran several times for the Zurich city council, without success. Here she followed the results of the elections in Werdhochhaus in March 2010.

Hanf-Ueli was also involved in the actions of the Occupy movement in 2011. At that time, he campaigned for fundamental changes in the financial and social system, for example, with rallies at Paradeplatz. “Together we are strong!” He chanted at the time.

In his election campaigns, Flückiger presented himself as a fighter for the rights of marginalized people. In 2018, when he ran for city council again, he called the “Tagblatt” “more affordable apartments, especially for people living on the fringes of society.” To do this, business premises must be converted into apartments.

Hanf-Ueli also wanted to expand opportunities for marginalized people to “work for a decent wage and take on more responsibilities.” In her view, it was possible to abolish “institutions that earn a healthy income at the expense of IV recipients or recipients of social assistance.”

“Bright, with corners and edges”

Flückiger was also often found on the lake near the Riesbach harbor. Employees of the IAPA Züri (security, intervention, prevention) also had contact with him from time to time, as Nadeen Schuster, spokesperson for social institutions and companies, says. But he was not a client of the IAPA. Hanf-Ueli will be remembered as an “original dazzling city with rough edges,” says Schuster.
