- Swiss radio and television are expected to cut 211 full-time positions by 2022 due to declining advertising revenue and ongoing transformation.
- At the same time, 95 new jobs will be created in connection with the expansion of new digital offerings.
- There will also be adjustments to the SRF program.
Last week it was announced that SRG, to which SRF belongs, will have to save another 50 million by 2024. Due to the decrease in advertising and sponsorship revenue, SRF will have to save another 16 million francs by 2022, as explained by the SRF Director Nathalie Wappler on a personal information sheet.
Job cuts will come through natural exits and early retirements, but there will also be layoffs, as Wappler said. Under current planning, the savings required for SRF will lead to a reduction of 116 full-time positions by 2022, from 2,292 current full-time positions to 2,176 full-time positions.
SRF expects layoffs
However, the reduction amounts to a total of 211 full-time positions because SRF wants to create 95 new positions at the same time. “We urgently need these new job profiles and skills if we are to succeed in transformation,” said Wappler. In addition, 100 recycling courses are planned; The necessary training budget is provided. The cut will take place in two stages: 66 jobs will be eliminated in January 2021, 145 jobs in fall 2021.
Natural fluctuation and (early) retirement are intended to prevent layoffs as much as possible; however, SRF has to expect 25 layoffs in the first stage and 95 in the second stage.
The reduction plans presented today are subject to a consultation process. In consultation with your social partner, SRG provides special support measures in the area of professional retraining and voluntary early retirement in addition to the social plan.
Radio and television program settings
There will also be adjustments to the SRF program. On the linear show, SRF wants to focus resources even more on prime time. The TV show “Mini Schwiiz, dini Schwiiz” will be replaced by other similar formats next summer.
Additionally, SRF is planning fewer new productions on the summer and vacation shows. As part of the already reported reduction in broadcasts of external events, the Basel Tattoo and the Monte Carlo Circus Festival will no longer be broadcast. SRF dispenses with the radio programs “Zwischenhalt”, “Blickpunkt Religion” and “Morgengeschichte”. The range of literature on SRF 2 Kultur radio will also change: the “52 best books” program will be replaced next year by a holistic and reorganized range of literature.
