“Oh my gosh!” A jerrycan is the downfall of Thomas, the Giro favorite
For top seed Geraint Thomas, the Giro d’Italia had already ended after the first mountain stage. The Ineos captain, who was one of the best in Saturday’s time trial, had to start early on the final ascent to Etna and lost 12 minutes to the day’s winner Jonatha Caicedo to the finish.
Thomas’s theft was not due to weak legs, but to a fall shortly after the start of Stage 3 in the neutral zone in downtown Enna. As a result of a blow, several drums jumped from their supports and rolled uncontrollably on the asphalt.
Thomas was unlucky and got one. The 34-year-old Briton skidded and fell brutally. A viewer filmed the fall and posted the video on Twitter – “Mamma mia” commented on one. Only after a few meters does the 2018 Tour de France winner come to a standstill.

Thomas continues with the torn shirt, but it soon becomes clear that the fall has not only left its mark on the outside. You have to start it 20 kilometers from the finish line. A first X-ray examination Monday night initially showed no fractures.
But further examinations Tuesday morning revealed that Thomas had “a small undisplaced fracture in the lower part of the pelvis,” according to team physician Ineos. As a precautionary measure to prevent the injury from worsening, the Briton must abandon the course.
Thomas will have very bad memories of 2020. At first he did not get a roster for the Tour de France due to insufficient form of the team leadership, then he missed a medal in the time trial at the Imola World Championship in fourth place and now he had to leave the tour prematurely as a contender for victory in the Giro.
